How to tell if you are at risk of falling
Some people have a higher risk of falling than others, and a combination of factors causes most falls. The more risk factors a person has, the greater their chances of falling. If you notice you have any risk factors or are just concerned about your balance, let our physical therapist at Moon Physical Therapy help you before it’s too late!
The most common risk factors include:
- Advanced age
- Previous history of falls
- Dizziness or vertigo (“spinning” sensations, even when remaining still)
- Vision problems
- Muscle weakness and reduced physical fitness due to a sedentary lifestyle and/or age
- Neurological disorders (i.e., Parkinson’s disease)
- Cardiovascular disease (i.e., heart attack, stroke, PAD)
- Cognitive impairments (i.e., dementia or Alzheimer’s)
Some people are in good health and do not have any of the above risk factors but have had a recent injury or are recovering from surgery affecting their gait, including the need for an assistive device (i.e., crutches, cane, walker, etc.). In addition, behavioral risk factors can increase the risk of falling, including the following issues:
- Certain medications
- Drinking alcohol
- Improper clothing/shoes
- Environmental factors in the home (i.e., stairs, rugs, curbs, etc.)
Our physical therapist will assess your medical history and conduct a comprehensive physical examination to determine how many risk factors for falling you may have. We will design a program to address your limitations and educate you on the steps you can take to improve your balance.
